Upgrade Your RV With LED Lighting

If you do a lot of boondocking (no hookups while camping), then you know battery life is one of the most important things you must plan for, especially if you have a small battery bank. One great way to save a lot of power is to convert your existing incandescent lighting to LED lighting. LED stands for light emitting diode and provides light in a very different way than incandescent or fluorescent lighting sources. The biggest benefit for a boondocker is that LEDs require very little power to operate, so you won't have to be so conscious of switching off lights when you don't need them.

24 Volt Drill

Just how much power can you save by going LED? In a typical travel trailer of say 27 feet with a super slide and a couple of bunk beds, you may have upwards of 20+ 12 watt incandescent bulbs. If you were to have all of these on at one time, you would be drawing around 20 amps of DC power. In a few hours, your single group 24 12-volt battery would be near dead. Even if you had two batteries, you wouldn't have much left to finish out a 2-day weekend without a battery recharge.

24 Volt Drill

Now if you were to replace every interior incandescent bulb in this fictitious travel trailer with a 24 LED array warm color lamp, each drawing 190 mA, the total power consumption drops to 3.8 amps, over 5 times less power consumption. You wouldn't likely replace every incandescent bulb with a 24 LED array lamp but you could and if you did, you would be using 5 times less power, even if you had every light switched on.

There are several different routes you can take when doing the LED lighting mod: individual lights, such as a night or reading light, all or some interior lights, interior and exterior, storage compartments, etc. Much will depend on you budget and coolness factor you are trying to achieve. Replacing every incandescent bulb may just break your piggy bank, but doing a few can still help save some battery power.

Using a single LED for a night light, like in the bathroom, can be a real life saver. Well, it may not save your life but if you have to get up at 2am to go, you won't be blinded by the light and you should be able to go right back to sleep. A single LED connected through a SPST toggle switch mounted on the bathroom light fixture can provide just enough light to do your business.

Perhaps you just want to change a few lights out, like the lights over your bed, that are generally too bright to read by. There are direct replacement LED lamps that require no modification to the lighting fixture, other than swapping bulbs. For this type of LED lamp, use the "warm white" type. The cool white LEDs provide a bluish tint to the light color and may not appeal to your reading tastes. The warm white LEDs provide a yellowish light color very similar to that of a normal incandescent bulb.

If you plan on replacing the main lights inside the RV and have the type of fixtures that contain two bulbs with a switch in the middle, you can replace just one of the bulbs to reduce cost. This way you not only save money, but you also can still provide more light when you need it by switching on the second bulb. For this case, you should consider LEDs that have a wide beam angle, at least 120 degrees. This is the angle at which light is projected from the lamp. The wider the better if you're trying to light up a large area. These lamps are typically configured in a flat package with many LEDs, as many as 36 in some cases. They simply affix to the fixture with Velcro and plug in just like a standard bulb.

Another cool LED mod is to fit a LED rope light under your RVs countertop. Many upscale RVs have this feature as a standard option but there is no reason you can't have this classy look either. First, have someone help you test fit the rope for length, ensuring you have enough for the whole countertop. Then get some double-sided tape and stick it to the cabinet or under the countertop where you want the rope to run. If you have any left over rope, drill a hole the size of the rope's diameter and run the excess through the hole. Just stick the rope to the tape and press firmly. You can also add a switch to control the rope power as well.

A step light is also another easy LED mod that consumes very little power. If you forget to turn it off, you don't have to worry since it can be on for days and still be easy on your battery. You can use a courtesy light or an amber side marker light. These mount with a couple of screws to the underside of the stairwell. Power can be run to an inconspicuous switch inside. Some even have light sensors so they can automatically turn on when it gets dark and turn off in the morning.

Outside compartments are also a great candidate for LED lights. These can be powered through a pin switch so that when you open the compartment door, the light turns on, and then off when you close the door. The color of the LED light is not so important as is the placement of the light. Compartments are usually rectangular in shape, so try and place the LEDs near the corners of the compartment. This way, you will get the most light to all parts of the storage area.

Finally, upgrading your RVs exterior lighting can make for a very clean look as well as improve safety going to the road. LED porch, marker, clearance, backup, turn, and running lights are all candidates for LED replacement. Fortunately for you, many companies, like Bargman for example, now make direct replacement fixtures that include everything you need to perform the upgrade. Just be sure to budget enough since total exterior lighting replacement can run in to the hundreds of dollars.

Tip: LED brake/tail lamps may not work with some older thermal flasher units found on some vehicles. An LED brake/tail lamp will require an electronic flasher/blinker unit which is commonly available at your local auto parts store. Just ask for the electronic equivalent of your thermal flasher.

Do you wish you could get a break from high electricity bills? Are you having trouble saving money because of rising energy costs? Not only is electricity becoming more and more costly, the process of burning fossil fuels is harmful to the environment. Is there any way to harness "clean" energy and save money in the process?

24 Volt Drill

There is! You can learn how to harness solar power for residential homes. There are packages available which include blueprints, instruction plans, step-by-step guides, how-to videos, etc. You can learn how to build solar panels for less than 0. You can harness sunlight and have it converted into electricity. This will help slash at least half of your monthly electric bill!

24 Volt Drill

Here are some facts about solar power for residential homes.

Photovoltaic cells are the main component of solar panels. These cells capture energy from the sun, which will later be transformed into electricity for your home. You can order them on the internet in bulk. Most sellers offer a package of 36 3x3 cells for less than 0. Sometimes you can find damaged ones on sale. Some damaged solar cells work just fine, and only have small flaws.

Tools that you will need for creating solar power for residential homes include sheet copper, shears, a wide mouth jar, electric drill, sandpaper, AC power inverter, alligator clips, soldering gun, wire cutters, plexiglass, caulk, volt meter, and protection glasses.

You'll need to install a good deep cycle battery that can withstand constant recharging. A battery is required as a solar panel component because it keeps all of the stored energy. Since sunlight isn't available 24/7, some energy needs to be stored so that your home can receive electricity on cloudy days and during the night.

Everything should be attached securely. The solar panels need to be able to withstand all weather conditions, including storms. Some people find it efficient to seal the solar cells to plexiglass with silicone caulk. Just make sure that you use the right amount of caulk - you don't want it bubbling in front of the cells. Leave a small amount of space between each cell. They need a little "breathing" room in order to function properly.

You might want to get some practice building small panels before you build large ones. You'll just need six cells or so to create a small panel that provides electricity to objects such as a CD player. Take it outside to the part of your property which receives the most amount of sunlight. If the CD player works, then you'll know that you built the panel right! Apply the same techniques to a much larger panel so that you can get electricity for your entire home.

Solar power for residential home is most effective when no shadows fall on the panels between 9 am to 4 pm. It's important that you find a good location for installation. Shade can actually damage the cells, so you need to be careful with where you put them. Some people install solar panels on their roofs. If you don't have a lot of property, this might be your best option. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, install the panels so that they are facing south. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, install them so that they face north.

Electrical Hot Tub Installation

Hot tubs come in various sizes ranging from the cute, two person "Soft Tub" to the very large multiple person party units.

24 Volt Drill

120 Volt Units

24 Volt Drill

Some of the small tubs have a 120V 20A power requirement, which means that you can just plug them in to a handy receptacle. I have even seen large tubs set up for 120V power supply. When this is done it takes forever for the tub to warm up due to very little amount of power flowing through the heating elements, I do not recommend this way of installation for the large units.

A note of caution here is that the tub will consume most of the circuit capacity so that if you use something with appreciable draw (hair dryer, microwave or other appliance or electric tools) the circuit breaker can be tripped. This is why it is best to run a separate circuit for the hot tub no matter what size it is.

240 Volt Units

Let us start with the two fixed placements.

1) Where is the electric service panel? Preferably the main panel since we will be pulling around 50 Amps of 240 Volt power. It is usually located near a front corner of the house.

2) Where is the hot tub located? Most times this will be located in back of the house.

Power to the Hot Tub

1) Where is the hot tub? Is it on a deck connected to the house or on the ground?

2) Is the house on a slab or is there access under the house?

House and Hot Tub on slab

Let us start with the house and the hot tub on a slab. This scenario tells us that we will need to run the whole power supply line in 1" Schedule 40 PVC conduit in the ground 18 - 24 inches deep depending on jurisdiction. Above ground it has to be in Schedule 80 PVC.

We run the conduit from the main panel down into the ground to the back of the house where we come out of the ground and enter the GFCI disconnect/Spa Pack.

Note: the above is for a surface mounted panel, if yours is flush mounted (or in the wall) then you will need to use two 45 degree sweeps to get into the bottom of the panel. This is quite easily doable, and chalking fills in any excess opening created during the installation process.

The power to the hot tub is required to be Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter protected (NEC 680.22 -A5). This GFCI protection panel (Spa Pack) is to be not closer than 5 feet from the hot tub, yet within site of the unit no gates or walls (NEC 680.24 -B2b).

The conduit then runs back into the ground and out to the hot tub where it re-emerges from the ground. The power feed into the hot tub is usually on the left side of the unit facing the removable access panel. Some units have built in PVC flex conduit leading to the power panel. If your unit does not have the flex already installed then you will need to install some 1" PVC Flex.

Wire selection

Now comes the fun part, pulling in the power wire. Most of the large units require 50 Amps of 240 Volt power. To provide that we will need #6 THHN stranded copper wire. You will need four (4) pieces for each of two runs. From the main panel to GFCI then GFCI to hot tub. Be very careful to measure accurately, Measure from the inside top of the main panel to the trench bottom, the length of the trench, then up into the Spa Pack plus six (6) inches. Next is Spa Pack to hot tub. It is always better to have an extra two feet of wire that you don't use than being 4 inches too short.

The four runs of wire are:

120 V -- Black

120 V -- Red

Neutral -- White

Ground -- Green

The colors are for identification, I do not buy #6 in all of the colors, I use colored coding tape to mark approximately two feet of each end of the wires. Inside of the hot tub control panel they are very good about identifying where each wire goes. It is also time to start filling the hot tub. Now back to the Spa Pack, the red, white and black wires attach to the bottom of the GFCI breaker with the green on the ground lug or bar. The wires from the panel attach to the ground bar (green) neutral bar (white) and the breaker feed lugs (black and red).

We are almost there, now back to the main panel and install a two pole fifty amp breaker (2P50) that is designed for your panel, connect the white and green wires to the neutral/ground bar and the red and black to the breaker. When the tub is full of water then you can turn on the main breaker, the GFCI breaker and start the hot tub from its operating panel. It will take a few hours to heat up. It is fun to check out all of the jets and other features of the tub.

Small 120 Volt tubs

If you are supplying a small tub that only requires a 20 Amp 120 Volt circuit then you use half or three quarter inch PVC conduit and three #12 gage wires, black, white and green. You can also use a standard GFCI receptacle mounted on the side of the house or post within the reach of the hot tub attachment cord.

Raised houses and decks

If you have access under your house and the tub is on a deck you can eliminate a lot of digging by just running the conduit under the house and deck. You follow the same procedure as above only no digging. If there is no flex conduit already installed, I come into the service section directly from the bottom of the deck. Using a 1" 90 degree sweep I determine where I will drill my entry hole, from inside, through the base of the hot tub and connect to the power feed conduit from the GFCI/Spa Pack under the deck. I also do not glue this last sweep until I have pulled in the power supply wires. That makes for an easier pull with less 90's to pull through.

Now it is time to enjoy your work, you did good, celebrate in your new hot tub.

* NEC = National Electric Code which is used by most areas in the US with similar codes in other countries.
