7 Equipment Problems That Will Cause Your Tuttnauer Autoclave To Fail The Spore Test

After a while, performing that weekly spore test on your autoclave becomes just another task you check off of your weekly Things-To-Do list. Until, that is, you get that notice that says you failed. Then, it becomes a top priority to find out what's wrong, why you failed the test. If you're ruled out operator error, then it's probably an equipment problem. Here are 7 problems you can look for if your Tuttnauer autoclaves fails the spore test.

24 Volt Drill

Not level: It's one of those things that's easy to over look but if someone jarred your autoclave or it was recently moved to a new location it could be that it's no level. The machine needs to be perfectly level in order to force steam downward at the proper angle.

Broken or dirty gasket: Check the gasket surrounding the door to the chamber. It may be dirty or have some mineral deposits on it that are preventing it from creating an air-tight seal. If that's the case, refer to the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. It may also be cracked or damaged in some way and it's very easy to replace.

Clogged or broken air jet valve: This valve allows steam to be released from the chamber. The pressure inside the chamber circulates the steam and forces it out through the air jet valve. This ensures that the steam inside the chamber remains at a constant temperature and pressure. If this valve is clogged or broken then that cooler steam remains inside the chamber and causes cool air pockets. To clear the jet valve, simply pump the clean out wire back and forth 10 times.

Mineral deposits: Mineral deposits on the inside of the chamber can prevent or inhibit steam circulation which can cause cold spots inside the chamber. Clean the inside of the chamber regularly following the manufacturer's directions. Never use an abrasive cleaner on the inside of the chamber.

Faulty heating element: Just because it looks like the heating element is working doesn't mean it's working properly. There may be a short somewhere that's preventing it from heating to the proper temperature. To check, you'll need to use a volt/ohm meter to measure the resistance. To find the proper range, consult your owner's manual.

Faulty timer: First, be sure you're allowing proper warm-up time. When starting with a cold autoclave you'll need an additional 10 minutes for the cycle. Obviously, the best way to test your timer is with a stop watch.

Faulty temperature sensor: The temperature sensor, or thermistor, controls the heating elements and tells them when to turn on and off. If the sensor is defective then your machine won't reach the proper temperature. If you've tested the element and it's within the proper range, then the problem is with the thermistor. Again, it's very easy to replace this part yourself.

In most states, even one failed spore test is cause for alarm. You'll immediately have to submit another test sample and wait another week for the results. By that time, you could be in big trouble. As soon as you see that first failed test you need to determine what's causing the problem.

And don't panic if you fail a spore test. Most of the time, it's very easy to find and repair any problem you might have with your Tuttnauer autoclave, without having to send it out for expensive repairs.

Shed Planning - Your First Air Compressor

I know when I purchased my first air compressor (and my only compressor to date) for some reason I was very excited. It was like it was a major component of a well run workshop and it just seemed like such a versatile tool. So I took stock of what I would be using the air compressor for. I knew for sure I wanted that nozzle to be able to blow the dust off the machines and sanded projects in the workshop shed. And of course there was inflating of tires and basketballs and air mattresses but most importantly I wanted to be able to drive my pneumatic tools.

I knew I had to buy a compressor big enough to power not only my small nailer but tools like air-powered sanders and spray equipment. I took my time and investigated the air consumption of those tools and then shopped for an air compressor that would be able to produce enough compressed air to drive them. I now know that it is best to choose an air compressor that will generate at least 20 percent more air than the hungriest tool.

There are quite a variety of air compressors available. There are single stage and two stage models with different horsepower and delivery ratings that signify the output power of the compressor. Because our homes (in North America, anyway) are wired for 120 volt output you certainly want to purchase a machine that runs on that voltage so you can simply plug it into a wall outlet. A good size air compressor to purchase would be a 5 to 6 horsepower machine. This will be large enough to power any pneumatic tool that you will use in your own home workshop. The tanks on this size machine will be in the 25 to 28 gallon range which will supply enough compressed air so that your machine is not constantly cycling and you can run more than one tool at a time. Make sure that your compressor has more than one outlet so that you are able to run more than one tool. Also be sure that there is a pressure gauge that will measure more than 135 psi.

A good thing to remember too is to read the manufacturers manual. There are always good tips on how best to keep your machine in top notch working order. You will want to bleed the air tank after each days use because moisture does condense in the tank and will cause rusting that will eventually ruin the tank. Always check the pressure safety valve ring to make sure it is operating at its peak performance.
